The Security Management Institute (SMI) was established in October 2019 by the Kenya School of Government (KSG) to undertake research, training and advisory services on diverse security issues. Initially, it began its operations on a nine month project funded by NIWETU – USAID focusing on countering violent extremism. Subsequently, it was consolidated into the Security Management Institute with a view to strengthening the capacity of county, national and regional security stakeholders; provide a platform for discourse on ideas, insights and experiences that would culminate in effective responses and interventions to current and emergent insecurity challenges.
The Institute’s principal objective is to contribute towards shaping Kenya’s National Security Policy and Practice through capacity development, high quality evidence based research, consultancy and advisory services. This will be done by pooling leading scholars and practitioners from the academia, military, police, intelligence, prisons and all other stakeholders in the Security Sector.
